Lawyers against the new GJKKO regulation: If it is not reflected, we will

The new regulations of the Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime have brought the legal profession's leaders into conflict with the court's administration. At the center of the objections are some of the new restrictions affecting lawyers, but also journalists' access to the premises of the Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime.

The President of the National Chamber of Advocates, Maks Haxhia, and the head of the Tirana Chamber of Advocates, Klodian Skënderi, reacted to the media on Monday, after leaving the court premises.

Haxhia announced that lawyers do not accept the regulation in its current form and warned of an escalation of the reaction if there are no changes.

"We are contesting the regulation. If there is no reflection, we will boycott court hearings," he declared.

One of the issues that has caused opposition is related to the use of mobile phones in court premises. According to Haxhije, the phone has become an indispensable work tool for lawyers and restricting its use directly affects the way the profession is practiced.

"For us, the mobile device is a 'mobile studio' where we work," said Haxhia.

Meanwhile, the new regulation has also raised concerns among organizations that deal with the protection of the right to information. They have opposed the imposition of restrictions on journalists, arguing that the new rules could hinder media access and public information on issues being considered by the GJKKO.
