Who is the candidate for President of Kosovo, Bekim Sejdiu?

Bekim Sejdiu will be the candidate of the Vetëvendosje Movement and the Democratic League of Kosovo for the post of president of Kosovo. The news was announced by the two parties on the afternoon of August 31.

Bekim Sejdiu is a Kosovar university professor, lawyer and diplomat, with experience in constitutional law, international relations and diplomacy, writes Radio Free Europe. 

Since 2002, he has been a professor at the Department of International Law of the Faculty of Law at the University of Pristina.

Sejdiu has also served as a judge on the Constitutional Court of Kosovo. He was appointed to this position in 2015 by the then President of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga.

In 2021, he resigned from the Constitutional Court and returned to academic engagement. Prior to his appointment to the Constitutional Court, Sejdiu had held positions in Kosovo's diplomacy.

He served as Kosovo's ambassador to Turkey and then as consul general in New York. His academic career is mainly related to law and international relations.

Sejdiu completed his studies in the field of law and pursued postgraduate studies in international relations and human rights.

His name has returned to the spotlight during meetings on the presidential issue between LVV and LDK, as part of talks to find a candidate for president of Kosovo.

Election to the post would make Sejdiu the seventh president of Kosovo since its declaration of independence. Sejdiu is married to Alberie Rraci Sejdiu, a teacher at the Hasan Prishtina primary school in Prishtina, with whom he has three children.
