Greece intervenes in prices, over 1,600 products with discounts in supermarkets

Over 1,600 everyday consumer products will be sold at lower prices in Greek supermarkets, in another government measure to ease the cost of living pressure on families.

The measure goes into effect today and the list of products is expected to expand in the coming days, exceeding 1,700 items. It includes basic food products, such as flour, milk and meat, but also everyday items, including detergents, shampoo, diapers and school supplies.

According to the scheme agreed between the government and businesses, the average price reduction will be around 7%. The application period varies from two to four months, while for some products the discount will be significantly higher. In certain cases, especially for school supplies, the discounts can reach up to 35%.

To make them more recognizable, products part of the agreement will have a special sign on supermarket shelves. Consumers will also be able to check prices through the online platform “PosoKanei” (“How much does it cost”).

However, the measure does not mean that every product in a category will have a lower price. Consumer organizations warn that the discounts only apply to specific items that are included in the agreement.

In addition to food products and daily items, the Greek government is also considering extending support measures for fuel.

The continuation of the 10 cents per liter subsidy for diesel is under discussion, at a time when fuel prices in the country continue to be over 2 euros per liter.
