Around 10,828 hectares of forest area have been affected by fires in Albania so far, which according to experts remains worrying as the fire season has not ended.

Forestry engineer Elvin Toromani told ABC News that the situation has worsened especially during August, when the number of fires has increased significantly throughout the territory.

According to him, after August 16, an increase in cases has been observed, while another worrying problem is the spread of fires even in protected areas.

"Up to now, the area reported for Albania burned by fires is 10,828 hectares. If we refer to the last two years, it is lower, but we must bear in mind that we are still dealing with fires," said Toromani.

He stressed that fires are now spread across the country, making the situation more difficult for emergency management structures.

"The problem is that in August, the number of fires has increased significantly, especially after August 16. We have the highest number recorded in the country. The fires are spread throughout the territory and the biggest problem is that the fires have also affected some of the protected areas ," he declared.

Toromani also raised concerns about the way the situation is being managed, arguing that the attention of institutions is focused mainly on extinguishing the flames and not on preventive measures.

" This issue has not been given the attention it should have by the structures. The only thing that is done is that attention is paid to the fire intervention part, but not to what is most important, prevention ," said the expert.

According to him, the consequences of fires are not limited to the burned forest area. The flames cause damage to habitats and wildlife, while also affecting the quality of soil and water resources.

"When we talk about the damage caused by fires, they are huge, including the loss of forest mass, damage to habitats and wildlife, damage to soil quality, its depletion. We also have consequences for water resources and water quality. The damage is extremely large," Toromani concluded.
