Summer 2026 hottest in 260 years

Austria experienced the hottest summer in its 260-year history of weather measurements, with the average air temperature reaching 2.6 degrees Celsius above the 1991-2020 average and 4.4 degrees above the 1961-1990 average, the state meteorological service Geosphere Austria announced on Monday.

Records were set at more than 100 weather stations. For the first time since records began, temperatures rose above 41 degrees Celsius. At the same time, across the country, between June 1 and August 31, about a third less precipitation fell than the long-term average.

"It has become difficult to find the right adjectives" to describe the summer of 2026, said climatologist Alexander Orlik of Geosphere Austria.

"Exceptional, extreme or unprecedented" were all appropriate descriptions for the maximum temperatures, the duration of heat waves, the number of hot days, extremely hot days and tropical nights, as well as the unusually low number of frost days in the high mountains, Orlik said.

The summer was also characterized by low rainfall, being one of the five driest summers since records began in 1858. It followed an unusually dry spring. 
 
During the first eight months of a year, there has never been less rainfall than in 2026 since the corresponding series of measurements began 169 years ago, according to Geosphere Austria./DPA News
