A quick decision by a school principal in Nepal is believed to have prevented a major tragedy, saving around 900 students from devastating floods that swept through the area.

Rajendra Dawadi, the principal of Tribhuvan Trishuli School in Nuwakot district, received four calls within a few minutes from different people, who warned him of the risk of flooding, foreign media wrote. 

The alarm grew even further when the leader learned that the waters had already engulfed the Betrawati settlement, upstream of the river.

Dawadi did not wait for further confirmation and decided to evacuate the students to higher ground.

" I decided I couldn't be late any longer. Even if the flood didn't come, we would only lose one day of school," he told the BBC.

The school had more than 1,600 students, and about 900 of them were evacuated to higher ground. During the evacuation, the principal saw the extent of the danger up close, as a dormitory building, about 100 meters from the river, was swept away by the raging waters.

For Dawadi, time was of the essence. He believes that a delay of just a few minutes could have completely changed the scale of the tragedy.

"If we had made the decision 10 minutes later, neither of us – neither the students nor I – would be able to speak to you today," he declared.

The director's decision has already become an example of the importance of early warnings and rapid response in the face of natural disasters.
