After hundreds of casualties, new threat emerges near Nepal-Tibet border

Just days after devastating floods hit the region, authorities have raised the alarm for another major danger near the Nepal-Tibet border.

Landslides have blocked two rivers and created a new lake, which now contains about 2.5 million cubic meters of water. According to Chinese authorities, the risk of the mass of water overflowing is high, especially due to the rainfall expected in the area.

The natural blockage has been created in the course of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers, while the water level is being constantly monitored by emergency teams and engineers, writes CNN

The main fear is that the water pressure will weaken the barrier created by the landslides and cause an immediate rupture. Such a scenario could bring large masses of water and soil towards inhabited areas, causing new floods and landslides.

The alarm is particularly worrying as the region has just faced a major disaster, with hundreds of people reported dead or missing. Scientists suspect the previous event was caused by the collapse of a glacier.

Chinese authorities have temporarily suspended some rescue operations and are using drones to monitor the lake and water levels.

Despite the alarm, experts emphasize that the situation could develop even more favorably, if the water manages to gradually flow through the natural barrier without causing an immediate explosion.
