Messi says "goodbye" to Argentina, the legend's emotional message

It's understandable that over time you might feel a particular nostalgia for an ex-partner. After all, after months, years, or decades, what once seemed like insurmountable flaws can seem like minor obstacles that perhaps would have been easily overcome if you had stayed together a little longer.
Beverly ended her relationship with the partner she thought she was destined to marry when arguments became more frequent and reconciliations less frequent. Now, 20 years later, she is married, happy, and generally satisfied with the way things turned out. However, her mind still wanders to the question of “what if?” She honestly can’t remember what they fought so much about. All she can think of are romantic evenings spent quietly eating dinner by candlelight or chatting in quiet silence on the couch.
Time has a way of distorting the accuracy of our memories of distant events, even the most memorable moments. Moreover, what actually happened may not match up at all with how we emotionally remember those events. Nostalgia tends to make what was negative seem more positive, and positive events seem almost perfect in our memory. Why, Beverly wonders, didn’t this relationship go from something stable and serious to a permanent one?
The nature of nostalgia for former partners
According to psychologist Soo Yeon Park of the University of Texas and her colleagues (2026), this question doesn’t have much empirical research on which to base an answer. There are almost no studies on nostalgia for ex-partners, although those that do exist suggest that people who are happy in their current relationship are less likely to engage in repetitive thoughts about past relationships.
As a theoretical basis, the authors from the University of Texas rely on the “motivated identity construction theory,” according to which people in long-term relationships incorporate the identities of their ex-partners into the way they see themselves and their life stories. According to this reasoning, Beverly did just that. Her ex-partner became part of her romantic life story. From that relationship, Beverly went on to build a new and now stable relationship, which she believes she is quite happy with. But the “what if?” questions persist.
What triggers nostalgia for your ex-partner?
Returning to the question of whether you miss your ex, the identity framework suggests that when you think about a past that never happened, you have no “data” to factor into how you see yourself in relation to that past partner. It all ended when the relationship ended. So all that’s left is guesswork. With your current partner, for better or worse, you know what happened, and some of those experiences may influence how you see the future. But you never know what might have happened with your ex.
This empty space allows memory to create all sorts of incredibly positive versions of the past. There you were at that candlelit dinner, looking into each other's eyes and thinking loving things. Unlike in your current relationship, you have no recent memories of arguments or misunderstandings to spoil this picture. The past can seem perfect because the present isn't there to interfere with that romantic glow.
It's important to note that dwelling on an ex with whom you never had a lasting relationship can be problematic if it diminishes your enjoyment of your current partner. Nostalgia is one thing; longing is another. If what's driving you to reminisce about the past is a constant longing for that person, it may be time to look at what's missing from your current relationship. Perhaps you can bring some of the spark of that relationship that never happened into the relationship you have today.
Ultimately, relationships become an integral part of our identity, even those that never materialized. You never know what could have happened, but the life you live is what actually happened. The past may offer us endless “what if?” scenarios, but only the present is the life we have the opportunity to build. / Psychology Today
