North Macedonia lowers oil prices, Albania in the lead, government without

State authorities in North Macedonia have decided to reduce the price of fuel.

Starting today, diesel (EURODISEL) will be sold at 95 denars/liter or about €1.54/liter, while BS-95 gasoline will be traded at 94 denars/liter or about €1.53/liter. Specifically, diesel has decreased by 6.50 denars per liter.

But, unlike countries in the region which are applying easing measures for citizens, the opposite is happening in Albania.

The government abandoned the Transparency Board 2 months ago, when it declared that it would be permanently abolished. 

During the period when the Board was setting fuel prices in the market, oil prices significantly exceeded the normal limit, reaching 265 lek/liter. The price of gasoline also jumped to 243 lek/liter.

The latest update on fuel prices in Albania shows a significant increase. Two days ago, the price of diesel was 219 lek/liter, an increase of 4 lek, while gasoline was trading at 198 lek/liter, an increase of 7 lek.

While countries in the region are intervening to ease the burden of fuel prices on citizens, in Albania the government has chosen to withdraw from any direct control mechanism. At a time when neighbors are lowering prices, the question remains open as to what measures the Albanian government is taking to protect citizens from the ever-increasing cost of fuel.
