Deadliest summer in Spain, 5,232 deaths from heat since May 15

A grim record has been set this year in Spain, where high temperatures have been linked to more than 5,000 deaths since mid-May.

According to the latest data from the MoMo system, published on Monday by Euronews , 5,232 people have lost their lives in heat-related circumstances since May 15. This is the highest number recorded since the system was created in 2015.

August has been particularly tragic. During this month alone, 2,147 deaths were recorded that were estimated to be heat-related.

MoMo, Spain's Daily Mortality Monitoring system, uses statistical models to determine the impact of temperatures on the number of deaths. This means that the figures do not only represent cases where heat is officially listed on the death certificate as an individual cause.

The 2026 record has already surpassed previous years' figures. In 2022, 4,789 heat-related deaths were recorded, while the following year the figure was 3,035.
