Tragedy off the coast of Northern Cyprus, ferry capsizes with over 260 people on

A ferry with more than 260 people on board capsized today near the coast of Northern Cyprus.

According to reports so far, at least 6 people have lost their lives, while 159 others have been rescued after the intervention of emergency teams.

The ferry had departed from the port of Kyrenia, also known as Girne, and was bound for the Turkish port of Taşucu, in the province of Mersin. According to preliminary data, a few kilometers from the coast the ship began to take on water and then capsized.

Northern Cyprus Transport Minister Erhan Arıklı confirmed the incident, while coast guard vessels and other rescue teams were deployed to the area.

Footage from the scene shows passengers wearing life jackets in the water, near the overturned ferry.

The causes of the incident still remain unclear, while search and rescue operations continue to verify if there are other missing persons.
