Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is just days away from setting a political record in Italy. Her government is expected to surpass Silvio Berlusconi's second cabinet and become the country's longest-serving government since the end of World War II.

According to Reuters, the current record is held by Berlusconi's second government, which remained in power for 1,412 days without interruption. If Meloni's coalition remains in power, the record is expected to be broken on September 4. For this date, the Italian prime minister is also preparing a political event, where the longevity of the government is expected to be presented as one of the important results of the mandate.

The record takes on particular significance in a country known for its frequent changes of government. Since 1946, Italy has had 68 governments and 31 prime ministers, with a cabinet lasting an average of about 14 months in power. Before Meloni, only four governments had managed to stay in office for more than 1,000 days.

Meloni took over the executive in October 2022 and over the years has managed to maintain the right-wing coalition, combining conservative positions with a more pragmatic line on economic issues and in relations with the European Union.

However, the coalition's stability has not been accompanied by progress on all the important reforms promised by the government. The justice reform was defeated in a referendum, while the initiative for the direct election of the prime minister has remained in limbo. The plan to expand the autonomy of the regions has also faced constitutional problems.

In several other areas, the government has had more room to advance its policies, particularly in matters of security, public order, and immigration, where stronger measures have been adopted.
