Fierza River dries up, energy reserves in the cascade fall

During the past week, the water level has marked another significant drop. The maximum level of Fierza is around 296 meters, while the lack of rainfall during July and August has significantly reduced the flows that supply the lake.

 In the northeast of the country, during these two months, rainfall has been almost absent.

The White Drini, which originates in the mountains of Peja, and the Black Drini, which comes from the Shën Naum area, are reaching Kukës with an average of less than 70 cubic meters of water per second.

But the difference becomes even clearer when these flows are compared to the amount of water that can be used for energy production.

Only one of the four turbines of Fierza can discharge at least 112 cubic meters of water per second. 
While if all four turbines work simultaneously, the discharge reaches about 450 cubic meters of water per second. So, the amount of water that is reaching the lake is significantly lower than the discharge capacity of the hydroelectric power plant.

A balance sheet that shows the pressure on the Fierza water reserve. Without significant rainfall and with the need for energy production, the lake level remains an important indicator of the water situation in the north of the country.
