In Germany, the number of young people who, after graduating from school, fail to integrate into the labor market and do not pursue appropriate education and vocational training is increasing.

According to data from the Federal Statistical Office, in 2025, around 10 percent of young people aged 20 to 24 were in this situation. In 2022, this percentage was 8.8 percent. Experts consider this a worrying development, as for young people this means a more uncertain professional future, while for the German economy it risks leading to a shortage of qualified workers.

According to the National Education Report, about a quarter of young people in this category are looking for a job. However, most of them are not available for the labor market. Among the main reasons cited are family care obligations and health problems.

 Bettina Kohlrausch, the scientific director of the Institute for Economic and Social Research, calls for more quality vocational training offers and greater support for young people so that they can successfully complete their training and transition more easily into the job market. Compared to other European Union countries, Germany still performs better.
