New study: Just a few minutes of intense activity can reduce the risk of some

It's not just the amount of time we spend exercising that affects our health, but also the intensity of our physical activity. A study published in the European Heart Journal, which analyzed data from the UK Biobank and followed participants for about nine years, found a link between vigorous physical activity and a lower risk of several chronic diseases.

According to the results, the health benefits were most noticeable when high-intensity activity made up more than 4% of total physical activity. This means that even a few minutes at a brisk pace, during a longer activity, can make a difference.

Vigorous activity is considered an effort during which your heart rate and breathing rate increase significantly, to the point where it becomes difficult to carry on a normal conversation. Running, fast cycling, climbing hills, swimming, or climbing stairs are some examples.

In the researchers' analysis, high-intensity activity was associated with a lower risk of several health problems, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, atrial fibrillation, chronic lung and kidney disease, and fatty liver. An association with a lower risk of dementia and all-cause mortality was also noted.

However, the researchers emphasize that this is a statistical association and not proof that intense activity directly prevents disease. Furthermore, the intensity should be adjusted to each person's physical condition.

The main message is that you don't have to spend hours on intense exercise. Even short, faster-paced intervals, incorporated into your daily routine, can be a way to increase the long-term health benefits of movement.
