One death from West Nile virus reported in the Netherlands

A person has died in the Netherlands after being infected with the West Nile virus, while health authorities have confirmed the return of cases of the infection in the country, for the first time since 2020.

The Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) has announced that one person infected with the virus has been treated in hospital. The institute's data suggests that there may be a total of three infected people in the Netherlands.

It is not yet clear whether the person who died is one of the confirmed cases. Dutch authorities have not provided further information about the victim.

West Nile virus is primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. In most cases, the infection may be asymptomatic or mild, but in rare cases it can cause severe neurological complications and be life-threatening.

The World Health Organization has warned that rising temperatures are creating more favorable conditions for mosquitoes that carry the virus and could affect its expansion in Europe.

Cases of the virus have also been reported this summer in other European countries, including Greece and Italy.
