Floods on the Nepal-China border, 168 dead and over 1,300 missing

Over 1,300 people remain missing after devastating floods hit the border areas between Nepal and China, with the death toll reaching 168. Hundreds of foreign tourists are among the missing.

In Nepal, authorities have confirmed 165 deaths and 826 missing. The number of foreigners unaccounted for is particularly worrying, with around 300 Indian nationals reported missing, as well as 54 Americans, 34 Australians, 33 Britons, 17 Malaysians and eight South Koreans.

On the other side of the border, Chinese authorities report three deaths and 558 people missing in Tibet's Gyirong district, an important area for tourist movements and traffic between China and Nepal.

The first suspicions about the cause of the disaster are related to a powerful natural phenomenon in the Himalayas. Satellite analysis suggests that a large mass of ice may have broken off a glacier and, along with rocks, fell into the Bhotekoshi River. The impact caused a sudden increase in flows and severe flooding in the lower areas.

Rescue teams are using helicopters and drones to search for missing people and evacuate stranded residents. The Nepalese army has been involved in the operation, and 114 people have been evacuated by air so far.

The extent of the damage is extensive. The floods have destroyed 19 bridges and damaged about 40 kilometers of a main highway, cutting off road connections and making access difficult for emergency teams.

The Nepalese government has declared three districts, Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading, as disaster crisis zones for a period of three months, while search and rescue operations continue.
