Montenegro reduces excise duties on oil by 20%, fuel prices fall

Montenegro has undertaken another temporary reduction in excise duties on fuel, aiming to curb rising costs for consumers.

The government decision, which comes into effect on August 25, provides for a reduction in excise duty on both gasoline and diesel, seenews writes . 

For unleaded gasoline, the excise duty drops to 0.522 euros per liter, while for diesel it is reduced to 0.352 euros per liter. These levels will be applied until September 5.

The effect of the measure is also reflected in retail prices. Diesel will be sold at 1.87 euros per liter, while Eurosuper 98 will be sold at 1.79 euros. Both products have suffered a decrease of 0.01 euros per liter.

Meanwhile, Eurosuper 95 will continue to cost 1.76 euros per liter.

The new prices will be valid until August 31. Then, the Ministry of Energy will review them for the first week of September, taking into account international oil prices over the past seven days and the exchange rate.

This is not Podgorica's first intervention. The Montenegrin government initiated temporary excise duty reductions at the end of March and has since revised them several times, depending on developments in international markets.

In the same period, Montenegro also changed its price-setting mechanism, shortening the price review period from 14 to 7 days, in order for the domestic market to react more quickly to global price changes.
