US lawmakers warn Vucic: Fight corruption or face sanctions

The US is increasing pressure on Belgrade. Two US lawmakers, one Republican and one Democrat, have warned Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić that failure to fight corruption and continued rapprochement with Russia, China and Iran could bring consequences from Washington.

Republican Joe Wilson and Democrat Bill Keating, both members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, have introduced a bill aimed at imposing sanctions and visa restrictions on individuals who undermine democratic processes, peace, and stability in the Western Balkans.

The US initiative comes at a sensitive time for Serbia, where large student-led protests against corruption and Vučić's rule have been ongoing for months. The protests began after a tent collapsed at the Novi Sad railway station in November 2024, killing 16 people.

Protesters have accused Serbian authorities of corruption and mismanagement in construction projects, demanding that those responsible for the tragedy be brought to justice.

Arguing for the bill, Joe Wilson stated that Serbia, in his opinion, has moved away from democratic standards and has become closer to countries that are considered adversaries of the United States.

“Under President Vučić, Serbia has deliberately moved away from the rule of law and closer to enemies of freedom like Putin, the Chinese Communist Party, and the terrorist regime in Tehran ,” Wilson told The Hill.

The Republican lawmaker also criticized the way the Serbian government has responded to the protests.

"Despite widespread protests against corruption, Vučić's government threatens to destabilize the region and beyond. The people of Serbia deserve better ," he said.

Along the same lines, Democrat Bill Keating demanded that Serbia take concrete steps in the fight against corruption and curb the influence of Russia, China, and Iran.
