Ecuador's ex-president found guilty of bribery

An Ecuadorian court has found former President Lenín Moreno guilty of accepting bribes from a Chinese construction group in exchange for the award of a public contract for the construction of the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric power plant.

 

The prosecution announced that four people have been found guilty in this corruption case, while the court has not yet decided the final sentence against Moreno. The prosecution has requested that the former president be sentenced to 6 years and 6 months in prison.

 

According to the indictment, Moreno was part of a corruption network that operated during the period 2009–2018 and was related to the contract for the construction of the large Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric power plant, a project carried out by the Chinese company Sinohydro.

 

Moreno, 73, who is wheelchair-bound, has consistently denied the charges. After the court ruling, he declared that he had not received “a single penny from Sinohydro” and claimed that the case against him was part of a political persecution orchestrated by former President Rafael Correa.

 

Sinohydro is accused of distributing around $76 million in bribes as part of this corruption case.

 

About two dozen other people are being investigated in the same case, including Moreno's wife and daughter, business executives and a former Chinese ambassador to Quito.
