UN warns: Global warming is expected to exceed the 1.5 degree threshold next

According to a UN report, global warming is expected to exceed the 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold next year, a limit set in the Paris Climate Agreement.

The report says that exceeding this threshold is now widely considered inevitable, however, it is emphasized that there is still an opportunity to limit the duration and magnitude of this exceedance, returning global temperature to below 1.5°C at a later date.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), even the most optimistic scenario predicts that global temperatures will peak at around 1.8°C above pre-industrial levels before starting to decline. Most other scenarios predict an even greater increase.

The report recommends an approach described as “overshoot, peak and decline”, which aims to limit as much as possible the increase in temperatures and the time during which they remain above 1.5°C.
