Opposing the suspension of pre-trial detention terms, the Appeal Court of Kosovo rejects Erion Veliaj's request

Opposing the suspension of pre-trial detention terms, the Appeal Court of Kosovo

The appeal of the GJKKO has rejected the request of the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, who opposed the decision of the First Instance Court to suspend the terms of detention.

Specifically, in the sessions of May 25 and June 10, the Special Court suspended the detention terms for the only arrested defendant, Erion Veliaj, due to the absence of the lawyers of the other two co-defendants.

The decision was challenged in court by lawyer Plarent Ndreca, who argued that the decision was unfair, as Veliaj was not the reason for the postponement of the hearings, according to what journalist Klodiana Lala reports.

But Judge Saida Dollani dismissed this request, paving the way for Veliaj to appeal to the Supreme Court.

We recall that the mayor of Tirana has been in detention since February 10, 2025. According to SPAK, Veliaj is accused of corruption in 9 cases, money laundering, concealment of assets, abuse of office and bringing illegal items into prison.
