Reuters: Rama threatens protesters with fines, facing toughest political front

Protests against Edi Rama's government continued in Tirana on Sunday, just hours after the prime minister announced new measures to curb demonstrations. Protesters first gathered in front of the Ministry of Education and then marched to the Prime Minister's Office, where they set fire to chairs set up by Rama as an invitation to dialogue.

In a report on recent developments in Albania, the international news agency Reuters writes that demonstrators took to the streets despite measures announced by the head of government, while the protest continues to defy the authorities.

"I believe that those who demand my resignation are mistaken if they think they can impose it through violence or any other means, but I do not believe that everything they say or demand is wrong ," Rama said.

Earlier on Sunday, the head of government announced new measures to curb violence during protests. According to Reuters, they include fines of 500,000 lek for people who participate in a protest that escalates into violence, even in cases where they have not personally committed violent acts.

This wave of protests comes after months of largely peaceful demonstrations over the summer against a luxury coastal project backed by Jared Kushner, son-in-law of US President Donald Trump.

Reuters describes this wave of protests as the biggest political challenge for Rama since he came to power in 2013. The prime minister, who won a fourth term last year, faces continued demands from demonstrators to step down.
