Navi Pillay is announced as the winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, the lawyer

South African lawyer Navi Pillay has been announced as the winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, in recognition of her many years of work in defense of human rights and the fight against impunity for war crimes.

The 85-year-old has a long career in national and international law. She faced racial discrimination during the apartheid years in South Africa, when she took on the defense of anti-regime activists and political prisoners.

Born in Durban in 1941, Pillay became the first woman to open a law firm in Natal province in 1967. After the fall of apartheid, in 1995, she was appointed a judge on the High Court of South Africa, marking another important moment in her career.

She then joined the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where she served as judge and president. During her work at the institution, which tried those responsible for the 1994 genocide, Pillay contributed to the development of jurisprudence on sexual crimes, which can constitute acts of genocide.

In 2003, she was appointed a judge at the International Criminal Court, and five years later she took over the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. She held this position until 2014.

Her honor comes at a time when the implementation of international law and the role of international institutions are at the center of debates about armed conflicts and human rights violations in various countries around the world.

Pillay was not among the names most frequently mentioned in public discussions about this year's winner. According to published data, 287 nominations were submitted for the prize, of which 208 individuals and 79 organizations.

The award ceremony is scheduled for December 10 in Oslo, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death. Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado for her efforts to defend democracy in Venezuela.
