Canadian writer Anne Carson wins 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature

Canadian writer, poet and academic Anne Carson has been announced as the winner of the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature.

The Swedish Academy praised her for her innovative work, which combines classical tradition with new forms of contemporary literature.

Carson, born June 21, 1950 in Toronto, is one of the most distinctive names in contemporary literature. She has created a distinctive profile through her combination of poetry, essays, prose, translation, and dramatic dialogue.

Trained in the field of classics, Carson is particularly known for the way she has brought ancient Greek literature into a modern context. Her works and translations feature authors such as Homer, Sappho, Euripides, and Sophocles, while classical myths and themes are often juxtaposed with modern experiences and concerns.

Among her best-known works are Eros the Bittersweet, Men in the Off Hours, Autobiography of Red, and The Beauty of the Husband.

Throughout her career, Carson has received a number of important awards, including the Griffin Poetry Prize, the TS Eliot Prize, the Princess of Asturias Award, the PEN/Nabokov Award, as well as Guggenheim and MacArthur fellowships. She is also a member of the Order of Canada.

Carson has taught at renowned universities in the US and Canada, and her work has been praised for its unusual way of combining poetry, prose, and classical tradition.

The Nobel Prize in Literature, awarded by the Swedish Academy, is one of the most prestigious awards in the world of literature. With this award, Carson becomes one of the internationally renowned authors who have been recognized for a work that challenges traditional boundaries between genres.
