Rama's "friend" heading for resignation? Meloni could lead Italy

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni could leave office in March 2027, paving the way for early parliamentary elections, according to a report by the prestigious Italian newspaper La Repubblica,  after the country was engulfed in massive protests.

According to La Repubblica, Meloni has discussed the possibility of resigning with his ruling coalition partners, Antonio Tajani, Matteo Salvini and Maurizio Lupi, and that the move could happen after the European Council summit, expected to be held in Rome in March, on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome.

The Italian newspaper reports that the earliest possible date for the elections would be May 16, 2027, while another scenario envisages them being held in June, together with local elections. However, so far there has been no official announcement of Meloni's resignation and the coalition leaders continue to publicly state that they intend to complete the usual mandate.

Meloni and Rama, two stances in the face of political pressure

The developments reported in Italy also take on a political dimension in relation to Albania, where Rama and Meloni have maintained close political relations. While in the case of the Italian prime minister the possibility of early elections is being discussed, in Albania student protests have been accompanied by demands for Rama's resignation and clashes between protesters and police.

Rama, for his part, has rejected demands to step down and has declared that his resignation cannot be imposed through violence. The prime minister has also announced new legal measures for the protests, which the opposition has repeatedly opposed.
