Hurricane Isaias hits the US, over 850,000 homes without power and one victim

More than 850,000 homes in the United States have been left without power after Hurricane Isaias hit the Florida coast. The storm caused significant damage, and a woman died in Escambia County after a tree fell on her home.

The death was confirmed by county Sheriff Chip Simmons in a video posted on Facebook. Authorities are still assessing the damage and working to restore power to affected areas.

Isaias was the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season and initially reached Category 3 strength, with sustained winds of up to 120 miles per hour. Before making landfall near Destin, Florida, at around 9:40 p.m. Friday, the storm weakened to Category 2.

Although the hurricane has significantly lost strength and maximum winds have dropped to around 55 kilometers per hour, the danger remains for parts of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said the storm left behind extensive damage and debris. According to him, this time it was not necessary to intervene in large-scale search and rescue operations, as in previous cases when teams faced extremely dangerous situations.

However, authorities have warned that the risk of flooding remains high, with heavy rains likely to cause flash and urban flooding. There is also a possibility of tornadoes in some areas of the southeastern United States.

Power outages have particularly affected Florida, Alabama and Georgia, where authorities had declared a state of emergency before the storm's arrival.

According to data published by power monitoring sites, about 428,000 homes in Florida, 325,000 in Alabama and 125,000 in Georgia were left without power. In Florida, at 7:00 a.m. local time, about 448,000 customers were without power.

The situation was particularly severe in several Florida counties, where outages affected 90% of subscribers in Santa Rosa County, 89% in Holmes County, and 86% in Washington County.

To deal with the consequences, more than 16,000 electrical maintenance workers were mobilized before the storm. They began repairs on Friday evening, initially focusing on the most damaged areas.
