Skënder Hita defends the use of tear gas in residential areas: It was

Three days after the student and youth protests in Tirana and the chaos caused in the capital, the Director General of the State Police, Skënder Hita, appeared at a press conference, where he also provided explanations for the use of tear gas by officers, including cases when it was thrown into residential areas.

Asked by journalists about the amount of gas used in residential areas and the inconvenience caused to residents, Hita described it as necessary, as according to him, the police were faced with a large number of stones thrown by protesters.

" It was necessary in those cases, as the barrage of stones thrown by the protesters was so great that it was impossible to intervene in any other way than with gas. So everything is within standard procedures," Hita declared.

But, while the head of the State Police justifies the use of gas with the need to cope with the situation on the ground, incidents were also reported during the protests that directly affected residents of the areas where the clashes took place.

Just two days ago, on "Mine Peza" Street, a tear gas canister ended up on the balcony of an apartment on the second floor of a building, where it exploded and smoke penetrated the apartment.

Despite Hita's justification, the safety of residents who are not part of the protest from the use of tear gas remains a separate concern.
