International Federation of Journalists calls for investigation into police

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and civil society organizations in Albania have published a joint open letter, calling for urgent institutional intervention and accountability following reported incidents of police violence against journalists and media teams during protests in Tirana, on October 13, 2026.

The letter raises concerns about repeated incidents of police intervention, physical violence and obstruction of journalists while covering the protests. According to the signatory organizations, these incidents endanger the safety of journalists, media workers, human rights defenders and others documenting issues of public interest.

The organizations demand independent investigations into the incidents, institutional accountability, effective implementation of existing protection mechanisms, and taking preventive measures to avoid the recurrence of such cases.

A special call is addressed to the Parliament of Albania, which is requested to exercise its oversight function by organizing a special hearing on the repeated incidents and the response of the responsible institutions.
