Clashes between protesters and police, Fox News: Riots against Rama's

Clashes between police and protesters against the socialist government continued for the third consecutive day in Tirana, while Prime Minister Edi Rama declared that he will not resign.

American media outlet Fox News has paid close attention to developments in Albania, reporting on tensions in front of the Ministry of Education, the use of tear gas and water cannon by police, and protests targeting government institutions.

According to the article, the protest unites student groups demanding higher education reforms with citizens opposing the government over broader political issues, including allegations of corruption and a coastal development project linked to Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump.

For his part, Rama told Reuters that governments change through democratic elections and that his responsibility is to listen to the legitimate concerns of citizens. He acknowledged that he is willing to discuss education costs, but condemned attacks on institutions and damage to public property.

Clashes between protesters and police, Fox News: Riots against Rama's

Clashes between police and protesters opposing Albania’s socialist government erupted in the country’s capital for a third day on Thursday, as Prime Minister Edi Rama vowed not to resign.
Protesters in Tirana were seen throwing stones at a police cordon outside the Education Ministry, prompting police to respond with tear gas and water cannons, according to the Associated Press.
The clashes followed unrest on Wednesday, when protesters attacked government buildings, banks and businesses, leaving 89 people injured, including 61 police officers.
“ As for the calls for my resignation, governments change through democratic elections. We held elections last year, not a revolution ,” Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama told Reuters on Thursday.
“ My responsibility is to listen, to respond to legitimate concerns and to move Albania forward ,” he added. “ The alternative would be a betrayal of the Albanians who gave me a strong mandate to conclude negotiations for membership in the European Union.”
Thursday’s protests included student groups demanding education reforms, as well as others who are part of a broader anti-government movement that opposes a major development project linked to Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, the Associated Press reported.
The so-called flamingo movement is demanding Rama’s resignation over allegations of widespread corruption. The movement got its name after protesters used banners with images of the pink bird.
“ The message coming from the street is clear: Albanians have had enough. The public’s patience with Edi Rama’s socialist government is over ,” Agim Nesho, Albania’s former ambassador to the United States, told Fox News Digital on Thursday.
" Edi Rama's socialist government is losing control. After 13 years in power, his administration faces mounting accusations of corruption, misuse of public funds and political favoritism ," Nesho said.

“ Meanwhile, poverty, unemployment, inadequate public services and a mass exodus of young Albanians seeking better opportunities in Europe have fueled widespread anger. Critics argue that, as in other failed socialist governments, the political elite has benefited while ordinary citizens have been left struggling to make ends meet.”
The European Union delegation to Albania called on Wednesday evening for authorities to respond proportionately, expressing concern about “the violent escalation of the protests in Tirana.”
Rama won his fourth term as prime minister last year, campaigning on a platform focused on Albania’s EU membership, a goal the country hopes to achieve by 2028, according to Reuters.
Student organizers told Reuters that the protests are linked to the high costs of higher education, a lack of financial support, conditions at universities and job opportunities after graduation.
The prime minister told the news agency that he is willing to discuss the costs of education, but added: “Attacks on institutions, destruction of public property and endangering public safety have nothing to do with the legitimate demands of students.”
“ Corruption must be fought and, as the EU itself has recently reaffirmed, Albania is fighting it like never before,” Rama also said.
“ Perhaps some forces, both inside and outside the country, do not want Albania to succeed as a forerunner in the EU accession process. But I will not allow violence to hinder Albania’s European future .”
