For all those who are looking for the cause of students

For all those who are looking for the cause of students

By Irena Beqiraj
A student can afford to live in Tirana only if his father owns a concession contract, a port or an airport; if he is a non-competitive supplier of services to the National Security Agency or a supplier of cars or clothing to the army; if he owns a casino; or if he is the only supplier on the market for anti-anxiety drugs.
For everyone else, it is impossible. Their cause is simply a description of what an ordinary Albanian, without economic or political power, experiences every day.
Unemployment has decreased, but their parents have to work two jobs to afford the privilege of buying food, some of which, although found on store shelves, resemble rare jewels in a museum exhibition.
In Albania, a package of 10 eggs costs 4.9 euros, while in Europe it costs an average of 3 euros.
A liter of ordinary milk in Albania costs 1.9 euros, a price significantly higher than its average in the European Union.
According to the latest Eurostat data, the combined cost of dairy, meat and eggs in Albania has increased significantly, reaching 35.6% above the EU average. Vegetables and fruits are also more expensive than in the EU.
Therefore, every visit to the supermarket, for a middle-income family, for a student, has become a significant financial event. As such, every shopping trip requires radical rationalization and optimization.
Meanwhile, housing has also evolved. From a basic necessity, it has become a cherished dream, just like retirement or achieving inner peace. Our young people now talk about home ownership in the same way that medieval peasants talked about the opportunity to become kings. Like the throne once, housing today can be achieved either as heirs, or by divine intervention.
Meanwhile, if a family illness lasts and is difficult, God forbid, more than 43% of these students' families can turn into poor families in the blink of an eye, forcing students to leave school to help their families.
Wages, of course, have increased, but not with the same enthusiastic momentum as the prices or profits of a handful of foreign investors, who, according to the government, are also very sensitive to the protests.
While the average salary of the parent of an ordinary student moves at the pace of an elderly man, the growth of prices, salaries of deputies and profits of sensitive investors is as fast as a twenty-year-old professional athlete.
Students are outraged by the hypocrisy of MPs, who earn eight times more than their parent's minimum wage (one of the highest ratios in Europe), but are still concerned about traffic lights and the destruction of public property, while they shamelessly voted for millions of euros that flow from the budget into Roni's pockets.
Hypocrisy, incompetence, and irresponsibility have turned the life of a student in Albania into a gigantic test of resistance, where their families find themselves defenseless in the face of uncontrolled increases in bills, and where the "middle class" is no longer a social category, but a nostalgic historical reference.
The students are there because the serious structural economic problems are not solved with boards, reports or failed housing programs, but by guaranteeing competition, reducing informality, removing monopolies in supply chains and cleansing the government of the most corrupt strain since 1912.
Do you want more reasons why the students are there?
Because just as votes are bought, grades are bought!
Because meritocracy does not exist!
Because they do not want to work their whole lives as cleaners, waiters, receptionists and escorts!
Do you want more reasons why the students are there?
Because you have failed to give them a homeland!
