Special, Kosovo Assembly to consider PDK's initiative to amend the law

The Kosovo Assembly is expected to consider the initiative to amend the law on Specialized Chambers tomorrow at 09:00. The issue has been listed as the first item on the agenda of the session called by the Speaker of the Assembly, Albulena Haxhiu.

The initiative was submitted by the Democratic Party of Kosovo on September 21, a few days after the Special Court's decisions against four former KLA leaders.

The proposed changes affect the jurisdiction of the Specialist Chambers and provide that cases considered outside their competence can be processed in Kosovo.

The draft law also includes the possibility of appeal to the Supreme Court of Kosovo, while proposing a maximum sentence of 15 years. The initiative also foresees that sentences can be served in Kosovo and that persons convicted by the Specialist Chambers can benefit from presidential pardons.

The consideration of this initiative comes at a sensitive political moment in Kosovo, as the Assembly is nearing the end of the constitutional deadline for electing a president. So far, political parties have not reached an agreement to resolve the impasse.

The leader of the PDK, Bedri Hamza, has stated that he is ready to hold talks to overcome the situation, while one of his party's main demands is the final approval of the changes to the Specialized Chambers.

If the president is not elected by October 6, the Assembly is dissolved and Kosovo heads to new parliamentary elections.
