SP demands second phase of Territoriale, Tabaku: You erased 15 municipalities

The Socialist Party seeks to launch the second phase of the Administrative-Territorial Reform, proposing the establishment of a Special Parliamentary Commission with a 9-month mandate. But the majority's initiative has met with opposition from Democratic MPs.

Jorida Tabaku accused the Socialists that, after approving a new territorial map without consensus, they are now seeking the opposition's cooperation to continue the process.

During the meeting of the Conference of Speakers, the Democratic MP questioned the seriousness of the new initiative, recalling that the objectives of the proposed commission had been foreseen earlier, but the majority had not supported them when the opposition requested the continuation of the work.

"Let's be serious about our role as deputies. I don't believe there is any point in discussing doing a job that we were supposed to do, but that wasn't done. Now another commission is being established, since the first commission only served to draw the map. This request is a copy of what was foreseen in the object of the Assembly's decision of October last year. Then you voted against, while now you are bringing it up for a vote again and you are in favor. This is not serious ," declared Tabaku.

Tabaku said that the reform should produce an agreement between the two political forces and be accompanied by legal changes that would improve public finances, services for citizens and the capacities of local units, as well as help in benefiting from cohesion funds.

"Erase 15 municipalities with a stroke of the pen. You lost the chance for consensus, because you don't want reform, but an electoral map. They say what we didn't do for 9 months, let's do it now. The process required that the product approved last week be consensual, in order to continue with a legal package that would aim to strengthen public finances, improve services for citizens, increase capacities and benefit from cohesion funds. The reform we have made, Mr. Speaker, is the same as that of 2015. It only affects one level of government ," said the democratic deputy.
