Microsoft calls for stronger regulations: Even milk is more controlled than AI

Microsoft President Brad Smith has called for stronger international standards for the security of artificial intelligence, warning that the rapid development of the technology is outpacing controls that should protect users.

In an interview with the BBC, reported by Reuters on October 12, Smith drew a contrast between strict regulations for conventional products and the lack of comparable controls for AI systems. He cited a carton of milk, which is subject to inspections for consumer safety, as an example.

Smith calls for governments to collaborate on creating a common regulatory framework that ensures companies are held accountable without stifling innovation.

Among the proposed measures are notifying users when artificial intelligence agents compromise systems or perform unwanted actions, the possibility of their emergency termination, and the obligation to report security incidents.

Concerns are growing as AI is no longer limited to generating text, but is being used to perform concrete actions through digital means. In these cases, a mistake can have consequences beyond an incorrect answer.

Smith said the UK could play an important role thanks to its artificial intelligence safety institution, which tests models to identify risks before use.

However, regulation of this technology remains a matter of debate. While some in the industry are calling for stronger security measures, critics warn that the rules could limit competition and favor companies that already dominate the market.
