Kosovo announces signing of accession treaty with Montenegro next summer

European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, has announced the possibility of Montenegro signing the European Union accession treaty during the summer of next year.

She said that the technical part of the negotiations with Montenegro could be completed by the end of this year or early next year, while emphasizing that the Commission is already preparing the accession treaty, which could be signed next summer.

"Then follows the ratification process, which could take one to two years, depending on what happens in the individual member states. This means that Montenegro could become the 28th member of the EU in 2028," Kos declared before the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee (AFET).

Montenegro is the most advanced candidate country in the accession process. In the accession negotiations, it has already provisionally closed more than half of the chapters. Currently, there are a total of 18 provisionally closed chapters, out of a total of 33 in the accession negotiation process. Montenegro still aims to complete the negotiations by the end of this year.

Montenegro will be the first to feel the new rules of the European Commission, which on October 6 approved the proposal for future member states.

The Commission has emphasized that the new approach will initially apply to the accession agreements in the Agreement with Montenegro, and then to future accession treaties.

EU enlargement will be at the center of discussions among European heads of state and government at the summit to be held on October 15 and 16 in Brussels. The leaders of the 27 member states will also examine the prospects for concluding negotiations with Montenegro.

"The European Council welcomes the work underway to draft the accession treaty with Montenegro and notes the aim of the EU Council presidency to close all negotiation chapters by the end of this year," the draft summit conclusions, which Radio Free Europe has had access to, state.

The European Commission will present at the end of October the framework roadmaps for the four countries considered most advanced in the accession process: Montenegro, Albania, Moldova and Ukraine.

The condition is that these countries maintain the pace of reforms. The roadmaps do not prejudge the outcome or the dynamics of the negotiations, but serve as a basis for the work of the EU Council./ REL
