EU "knocks on the door" of Greece, opens infringement procedures for

The European Commission has launched infringement procedures against Greece for failing to implement several European Union rules in national legislation on time.

In the case of electricity, Greece is among 18 member states that have not notified the full transposition of new European rules into national legislation. These rules relate to consumer rights, including the ability to choose and change supplier, as well as access to more competitive and innovative offers.

Athens has also been cited, along with 25 other member states, for failing to communicate the necessary measures to incorporate into national legislation new rules for the hydrogen and decarbonised gas markets. The package aims to promote the use of renewable and low-carbon gases, including hydrogen, while ensuring security of supply and energy affordability.

The proceedings against Greece are not limited to the energy sector. The European Commission has also taken steps regarding the implementation of European anti-money laundering rules. In one of the cases, the Commission found shortcomings in the transposition of provisions relating to criminal offences and sanctions for money laundering.

The Commission has also focused on the implementation of European rules against trafficking in human beings.

Greece has been given two months to respond to the Commission's requests and take the necessary measures. If the response is not considered sufficient, the procedure may move to the next stage, through a reasoned opinion.
