No opposition, Kosovo Assembly approves draft law on Specialized Chambers

The Kosovo Assembly has approved the draft law proposed by the Democratic Party of Kosovo to amend and supplement the Law on Specialized Chambers and the Specialized Prosecutor's Office.

The draft law received 91 votes in favor, while there were no votes against and no abstentions.

The PDK initiative had previously been approved in principle by the Legislation Committee, which had unanimously supported the draft law.

After the vote, the draft law will be reviewed by the relevant committees, where it will be analyzed article by article. The committees may propose amendments and will then prepare a report with recommendations for the Assembly.

The draft law will be returned to the plenary session together with the proposed amendments and the committee report. At this stage, the final review will take place and its adoption will be put to a vote.

According to the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly, new amendments cannot be proposed during the second reading session.

The PDK draft law was submitted a few days after the announcement of the verdict by the Specialist Chambers in The Hague against the former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army.

On September 16, Hashim Thaçi and Jakup Krasniqi were sentenced to 25 years in prison each, Kadri Veseli to 18 years, and Rexhep Selimi to 13 years, for war crimes. All four former leaders were found not guilty of crimes against humanity.

Defense teams have announced that they intend to appeal the decision on war crimes charges.
