Police investigate online calls for terrorist acts, but provide no evidence of

The Director of the Department of Public Security at the State Police, Dhimitraq Ziu, stated on Friday, October 16, that authorities have identified channels and communication groups on online platforms, through which calls for violent and terrorist acts, as well as threats to the lives of police officers, have allegedly been made.

The statement comes on the fourth day of student and citizen protests against the government of Prime Minister Edi Rama, which have spread to several cities in the country and have been accompanied by clashes between protesters and police, attacks on public institutions and damage to private property.

"The relevant criminal proceedings have been immediately registered for the offenses related to these extremely dangerous criminal acts and we are cooperating closely with international partner agencies to discover IP addresses, identify the administrators of these channels and any user who calls for violence and terrorist acts," Ziu declared during a press conference.

He claimed that anonymous accounts on social networks are being used by individuals or groups with extremist and violent tendencies, inside and outside Albania, to incite unrest.

According to Ziu, the police are conducting detailed investigations to identify the people involved and determine their intentions, which he described as destabilizing and dangerous for the country.

However, when asked by journalists, Ziu did not provide details on the suspected groups, the identity of their administrators, or concrete evidence that would support the claims of foreign actors' involvement in inciting violence during the protests.

His statements follow a series of similar accusations from police leaders and government representatives, who have linked the escalation of protests to the activity of organized groups at home and abroad.

A day earlier, the Director General of the State Police, Skënder Hita, claimed that masked individuals, who according to him are inciting violence during student protests, have been recruited to serve the interests of the real organizers, inside and outside Albania.

Prime Minister Edi Rama also accused the opposition and foreign actors on Friday of inciting the unrest, insisting that the acts of violence do not represent the students' demands. Speaking next to a business destroyed during the protests, Rama pledged support for damaged businesses.

Allegations of foreign interference have become part of the government's public stance on the protests, but so far the authorities have not presented publicly verifiable evidence to support these accusations.

The reaction of the law enforcement forces has raised questions about the ability of the State Police to manage the protests, following reported incidents of disproportionate use of force against protesters and the withdrawal of officers from areas where public and private property was attacked and destroyed.

While authorities have emphasized suspicions of violent organization and foreign interference, the spread of protests in various cities and the participation of students have also highlighted the extent of dissatisfaction with the government and demands for Prime Minister Rama's resignation. / BIRN
