In early July, the Police announced that they had launched verifications for suspected coordinated activity in cyberspace, after identifying more than 10,000 accounts with suspicious activity.

The focus of the verifications were negative comments and ratings towards hotels, restaurants and other tourist businesses in Albania.

It is also about subjects that protesters have publicly linked to people close to Prime Minister Edi Rama.

According to the Police, they are verifying whether these accounts were used in a coordinated manner to damage the online reputation of businesses.

But while the Police were dealing with accounts that were suspected of harming businesses, another development occurred on Instagram that was specifically related to people who had been active in the anti-government protests.

Dozens of accounts belonging to activists, protesters, and people who covered the recent protests have been closed or suspended. Among the affected accounts are accounts that have repeatedly posted footage and material from the protests known as the “Flamingo Revolution.”

In some cases, posts from these profiles have been removed after reports of copyright infringement, while some of the accounts have been closed completely.

Activists have opened new accounts, while some of the closed profiles have circulated online as examples of what they consider a wave of crackdowns on critical voices.

And here the question arises about the State Police.

If the Police have launched an investigation to discover who is behind more than 10,000 accounts that are suspected of using negative reviews against businesses in a coordinated manner, will they show the same interest in the dozens of protestor accounts that have been closed on Instagram?

In the first case, the Police have decided to go public and confirmed that they will investigate who is behind the accounts and whether there is organized activity.

In the second case, so far there is no public investigation by the Police to show that it is being verified who and how led to the closure of the protesters' profiles.

Of course, there is no data linking the State Police to the closure of these accounts, but that does not make the question any less legitimate.

It remains to be seen whether they will also investigate who is hiding behind the closure of the protesters' own accounts, because if a review can be the subject of an investigation, why not the disappearance of an account? S.Gj-Politiko.al
