Rama in 300 questions: Defends Balluk, attacks justice and "washes hands" of Agas; what did he say about Ahmetaj's accusations

Edi Rama has chosen a marathon interview with 300 questions to give his version of some of the issues that have long placed the government and its relationship with justice at the center of public debate.
In front of journalist Rudina Xhunga, as part of the "Flasim" podcast, the Prime Minister spoke about former Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj, Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku, businessman Ergys Agasi, Mayor Erion Veliaj, the protests, and the government's relationship with justice.
On the one hand, Rama declares that SPAK is one of the most important developments that have happened to Albania in 35 years. On the other hand, when investigations and judicial decisions affect figures close to power, the prime minister does not spare criticism and places the system in the face of serious accusations.
In the case of Balluk, he goes even further, saying that the Constitution has been violated and that the judiciary has attempted to take over the powers of political institutions.
Arben Ahmetaj, from the trusted man to the "carnival mask"
One of the names Rama mentioned during the interview was Arben Ahmetaj. The Prime Minister was asked if he had been aware of the possible problems of important people he had close to him and whether the accusations against them should have been a reason for his removal from office.
Rama did not accept that an accusation, in itself, can serve as a basis for removing an official. He based his response on his personal experience, arguing that he himself has been accused and that this does not automatically mean that the accusations are true.
"If I were to start from the accusations and use them as an argument not to appoint or remove someone from office, I would dismiss myself every morning or every evening. Because, look, I have been accused, look, no one in this country has been accused. And this, knowing myself very well, that I know myself well, has made me believe that others are also being accused unjustly ," said Rama.
But in Ahmetaj's case, the prime minister admitted that he later faced a different reality. He used a strong metaphor to describe what he believed was a misplaced trust in his former colleague.
"But time has shown that, in the case you mentioned, I had invested in a carnival mask, not in a public asset to be trusted. That's how it goes. If it later turns out that the human resource you invested in is contaminated, or the person you saw was a carnival mask, it's painful, but it's a fact ," Rama declared.
Edhe marrëdhëniet me biznesmenin Ergys Agasi u bënë pjesë e intervistës.
Protestat, Rama pranon: Nuk e prisja
"Tirana is an absurd example. There are 2 similar cases, one in Hungary and one in Turkey. Strasbourg has dismissed both cases as violations of human rights. For the elected mayor of the capital to remain in detention and not have any opportunity to replace him, because the Constitutional Court said 'he is in office', this is absurd. The capital is suffering from a lack of leadership. I see in the reports with the municipality how impossible it is. Tirana's MPs are extremely frustrated. I do not agree with Braça because you are in the governing majority, but on the other hand, the problems you raise are problems related to the municipality. The municipality has no head. This is a social, political and economic experiment for a capital to be led without a head. But I think that SPAK is one of the best things that has happened to Albania in these 35 years," Rama said, among other things.
This part of the interview shows another stark contrast in the Prime Minister's stance. Rama calls Veliaj's situation an absurdity and criticizes the effects it has had on Tirana's leadership, while in the same statement he describes SPAK as one of Albania's most positive developments in recent decades.
300 questions and a clear line: political protection, clash with justice
Rama's long interview with 300 questions once again puts one of the strongest clashes of his mandate at the center: the relationship between political power and justice.
The Prime Minister defends Balluk, questions her suspension, criticizes Veliaj's situation, while admitting that his belief in Ahmetaj was wrong. Regarding Agas, he distances himself from any claim that a person close to him can speak on his behalf.
At the same time, Rama acknowledges that the protests and rising expectations of citizens constitute a new challenge for the government.
But the strongest message of the interview remains precisely this contrast: the prime minister calls SPAK one of the best things that have happened to Albania, but when justice affects his political people, he speaks of absurdity, violation of the Constitution and of a justice system that is taking over the powers of government. / Politiko.al
